About Song Mountain Wushu
“Wushu” is a broad term, literally meaning “martial arts”, and encompasses all styles of Tai Chi and Kung Fu.
Song Mountain Wushu is a member of MAA - The International Martial Arts Alliance. We make our home in Melbourne, Australia, and are named in honour of Song Shan, one of China’s sacred mountains and home to the famous Shaolin Temple.
We have options: you can attend classes or arrange personal training sessions, either way you will have the opportunity to study:
Tai Chi – both the traditional Yang Family Style, and select modern forms
Kung Fu – including northern style (Changquan), southern style (Nanquan), Shaolin styles and traditional weapons
Qigong – meditative breathing and mobility exercises for improved health and concentration
There are many different ways to approach martial arts training: as a sport or an art, as a system for self-defence, as a practice for improved health and fitness, or even as a method for maintaining cultural traditions. No one way is right or wrong, instead in the end, the training may be applied to any number of outcomes, and your reason for training will always be your own.
Having said that, we train primarily for health and fitness, and treat martial arts as an art more than as a sport or rigid discipline. As such, our classes and training methods are somewhat fluid, as we attempt to apply the traditional practices to enrich our modern-day lives. The practice of Wushu can be grounding, at times demanding, but often it is useful simply as a way of relaxing the mind and calming the body.
You do not need to already be disciplined, fit, or well-coordinated to begin training, only curious. In fact, some of the most useful practices are the simplest ones. If you would like to try it out, please contact us.
All classes are taught by Instructor Chris Serong.
